|Kentucky bluegrass is a very important, widely-adapted species with a high degree of genetic variability. Because of this variability, poa species are found virtually everywhere in the cool season domain. Bluegrasses spread through their rhizome system, giving the turf both excellent sod strength and the ability to recuperate and fill in after periods of stress and use. Famous for their ability to produce a dense, attractive, lower-growing turf,
bluegrasses are also slow to germinate and establish and prone to disease and insect attack. In general, Kentucky bluegrass requires higher maintenance for satisfactory performance.
Hybridization methods now being employed are leading to drastic improvements in heat and drought performance. This should extend the range of bluegrass well into warmer season regions.
Species (Poa pratensis)
A versatile rugged performer under low to moderate fertility levels. Improved disease resistance, dark color, and moderate density makes it suitable for most bluegrass applications.Printable data sheet
Deep dark green color with moderate density and texture. Strong Midwest through northern tier performance, including shade. Very good sod strength, resists scuffing. Excellent overall disease resistance.Printable data sheet
Compact America type bluegrass featuring excellent color, texture, density and shade tolerance under normal to moderate fertility management. Suggested for elite bluegrass mixtures intended for sod production, golf/sports turf and professional landscape.Printable data sheet
Bolt Kentucky Bluegrass
Bolt jumps out of the ground faster than any other Kentucky bluegrass in the recent NTEP trials. It’s a rapid germination and fast establishment allow it to crowd out weeds, supress poa and form a dense sward.Printable data sheet
Fahrenheit 90 Hybrid
A new "poa" species that promises improved drought and heat tolerance as well as better disease resistance in more humid environments typical of the Transition zone and South. Good color and texture--sun into shade.Printable data sheet
Legend is an aggressive, Midnight-type, dark green Kentucky bluegrass variety ideal for use in both high and low maintenance applications.Printable data sheet
Super NTEP elite under most applications including the transition zone. Rich dark green color with low cut density retention, wear tolerance, and excellent sod strength. Broad disease resistance.Printable data sheet
Zinger is a utility Kentucky bluegrass that offers a solution to multiple turf needs. It’s fine leaf texture and superior color allow it to blend well with other cool-season grasses.Printable data sheet
