bluegrass

Widely-adapted and low-growing grass.

Kentucky bluegrass is a very important, widely-adapted species with a high degree of genetic variability. Because of this variability, poa species are found virtually everywhere in the cool season domain. Bluegrasses spread through their rhizome system, giving the turf both excellent sod strength and the ability to recuperate and fill in after periods of stress and use. Famous for their ability to produce a dense, attractive, lower-growing turf,

bluegrasses are also slow to germinate and establish and prone to disease and insect attack. In general, Kentucky bluegrass requires higher maintenance for satisfactory performance.

Hybridization methods now being employed are leading to drastic improvements in heat and drought performance. This should extend the range of bluegrass well into warmer season regions.
