Tall fescue is adapted to a wide range of growing conditions and grown for hay, pasture and silage. Under good management, tall fescue is easy to establish, survives heavy grazing pressure and hardy. Tall fescue is deep-rooted and forms a dense sod. Tall fescue tolerates wet soils and short periods of flooding, but is also drought tolerant.
Tall fescue has been used as forage for many years. Many older varieties such as Kentucky 31, are |
already established in fields or pastures and have many problems that have arose overtime. These problems are due to the infection of the fescue with a fungus called toxic endophyte. Through our research and development we now have new varieties of tall fescue that are endophyte free or endophyte friendly. These should be considered when planting new pastures or renovating older ones.
